Author Interview - Kay Jaybee

~ Can you tell us about yourself?

Hello there, many thank for inviting me to chat to you today!

My name is Kay Jaybee – or possibly Jenny Kane- or it could be something else entirely! I have lived all over the UK, from the NE of Scotland, to Wales, the Midlands, and now I’m tucked away in the South West of England.

I have been writing erotica for just over ten years and contemporary fiction for three years. I’m lucky enough to be one of the Brit Babes, a group of British based erotica writers who are fighting to keep quality in the erotica genre!

As well as writing, I work for a Distance Learning Company, look after my family, and drink an insane amount of coffee.

~ It states on your website you have a collection of degrees. How do you balance your time to study between writing under two names? Do you have superpowers?

I wish! There really aren’t enough hours in the day. I don’t do much with my degrees these days, apart from pillage my research for storylines. I made good use of my archaeology degree when I wrote my erotic romance, Digging Deep, and of my Medieval History PhD when I put together Romancing Robin Hood (under my other writing name, Jenny Kane).

I tend to take it in turns between writing as Kay and Jenny. So far this year, it has been Jenny’s turn, but Kay will be back soon.

~ If you could have any superpower in the world, what would you choose and why?

Apart from wishing I could squeeze more minutes into hour, I’d like to be able to see around corners. I am very very clumsy, and being able to see around me more would be good for everyone! I often walk into people, tread on toes, and accidentally knock into things. I bruise easily, so I often look as if I’ve been in a fight, when in fact, I just have shockingly bad special awareness.

~ Do you have any new or future bookish news you'd like to share?

As I write this blog I find myself in between books. Only an hour ago I pressed the ‘send’ button on my latest Jenny Kane novel (Another Glass of Champagne- out in 2016), and about to pick my next project. At this precise moment I don’t know which of the five or six novels I’m just dying to write to do next. I will probably do a few erotic short stories while I’m thinking.

~What are you currently working on? Can you give us a snippet?

This is a tiny bit from an erotic short story I’ve been playing with, which will probably be called Highland Fling.

“...Rob didn’t look round. He didn’t need to. He could feel the two sets of eyes on his back, they were almost scorching him. Taking his time to fill the second bottle, the ranger thought the situation through. Two of them, both hot tottie. One a blonde, one a red head. One English. One American. A tasty combination. Their bulky winter coats, sensible walking trousers and boots didn’t give much away, but he was willing to bet that once all the layers were off, they would be a sight to behold. He could be wrong he supposed, but maybe…Rob replied to Karen’s question. “I like it well enough hen. I ken it’s quiet, but I like it peace and quiet.”

“So, you don’t get…lonely then?” Karen knew she was being blatant now, but she didn’t care. If she could pull this off, it would be the perfect holiday present for her friend.

Stacie, her mouth dry with anticipation, stepped forward. Pulling off her gloves to reveal two pale hands with violently clashing purple nail varnished tips, she took the full bottles from out of Rob’s hands. Making sure her fingers brushed his as she did so, she felt the spark that told her she should keep going.

“Thank you,” Stacie purred as she passed one of the bottles to Karen.

The tacit standoff that followed, as tension rippled through the small office room come workshop, was eventually broken by Rob. “Would you lassies like something to warm you up before you go?”

His sentence, delivered with a dead pan tone, could have been suggesting something as mundane as sharing of a mug of hot chocolate, but his sparkling eyes suggested so much more.

Stacie felt her pulse quicken as Karen casually replied, “Well, if it’s not too much trouble that would be lovely.” Another normal sentence, but packed with enough eyelash fluttering that she might as well have screamed out “Fuck Us Now!”...”

~What inspired you to write your first book?

My first solo book, The Collector, was inspired by a conversation  I overheard while I was at Heathrow Airport. I then began to collect together ideas from other overheard conversations, and allowed my imagination to expand each one into a short sexy tale.

~ Are there books you're looking forward to reading this Summer?

So many!! I read a great deal. Most of all however, I can’t wait to read The Gallows Curse by Karen Maitland. I recently met Karen at the Tiverton Literary Festival, and she was amazingly lovely and very encouraging about my future writing career.

~ What book are you currently reading?

A Clear Solution by Eric Macfarlane – so funny!

~ Do you have any advice for aspiring authors? 

Enjoy it! Don’t get bogged down in what you ‘ought’ to write- write how you want to write.

~ Is there anything you'd like to say to readers?

A great big THANK YOU. It’s been almost eleven years since my first publication- if it wasn’t for my lovely readers, I’d have no one to write for!
